I work well with limitations. When frequent collaborator D.A. Stern asked me to help him make a quickie video for his new single “People Named Ben” on super 8mm, I jumped at the opportunity, knowing that operating the camera myself, having a finite number of rolls to shoot (8 to be exact) and only a loose plan of what we would film, would feel fun in a relatively low stakes and improvisatory way.
What results is a charming, anything goes kind of video following David and his trusty Pumi dog “Wurlitzer,” dripping in the nostalgic vibes that only film stock can effortlessly provide.
