CECILIA CHIANG: 一百年

Featuring interviews with Cecilia Chiang, Alice Waters, George & Cindy Chen, Michael Tusk, Peggy Knickerbocker, Darrell Corti, Patricia Unterman and more.

What makes a good party? In honor of famed restauranteur & culinary icon Cecilia Chiang’s 100th birthday, I was commissioned to make a short doc piece chronicling the occasion at Alice Waters’ world-renowned Berkeley establishment Chez Panisse. In addition to sit-down interviews with some of the Bay Area’s most-esteemed food & wine figures, I prioritized capturing the ambience of the party as sort of an elevated home video — the food, the music, and vérité exchanges between subjects and partygoers. The film took on all the more significance as COVID hit (and communal celebrations like this became basically non-existent) and Mrs. Chiang sadly passed away in October 2020.
